During the month of March and beginning of April, we will work on learning some farm animals, describing them and saying what they give us (milk, meat, eggs). Students will be expected to describe a farm animal orally and in the written form. We will work on using our describing words to describe them.
The last word wall words for the year are the March word wall words. Continuing on, a greater emphasis will be on reading short texts with these word wall words. It would be very beneficial to review the word wall words and the stories starting back in September.
Please remind your child of the importance of using active listening strategies to understand (looking at teacher, looking at visual aids, repeating words with actions) and using active listening strategies to interact (repeating words with actions, songs, formulating simple sentences modeled). Your child is responsible for his/her learning. ex kitten story

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following parents who came to talk to the Gr1 classes about their occupation: Mr and Mrs France, Mrs Rolheiser, Mr Semenchuk, Mr Van Ryswyk, Mr Handler, Mrs McKenney and Mrs Barbe.
The presentations were great, informative and very interesting. The students and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about such a great variety of occupations. Again, Thank You!
This month our topic will be about Winter. Students will learn about the clothing we wear and the activities we play. Students will be asked to describe the steps to follow to make a snowman. You can encourage your child to name the clothes he or she is putting on as they get dressed to go outside using the structure 'Je mets ...' (ex.:; Je mets un beau manteau bleu.) and to describe what they are wearing using the structure 'Je porte ... (ex.: Je porte un beau manteau rouge.).
*****In order to learn French, students need to listen attentively and engage actively during lessons. Students need to use active listening strategies to understand (eye contact with speaker, looking at visual aids) as well as use active listening strategies to interact (repeating words with the actions, songs, volunteering answers using the vocabulary and structures presented). Please discuss these expectations with your child.
If you have read this newsletter, please draw a snowman in your child's agenda.

Happy New Year! Bonne et heureuse année!
This month we will talk about different people who work in our community. We will discuss how they contribute to our community as well as how what they do relates to us. We will also continue to inquire about how and why our responsibilities may change.
You are encouraged to discuss responsibilities at home with your child. You may talk about why an older or younger sibling may have different responsibilities and why they may change. You could also talk about the kinds of responsibilities you had growing up.
New year, new start! Please encourage your child to listen attentively during lessons, engage and demonstrate what they have learned by participating actively. Please encourage your child to be the best version of themselves and be respectful of the class rules, their environment, their peers and teachers.
A letter was sent home today to ask if you would be interested in speaking to the Gr1 classes about the work you do. This includes a stay at home Mom as they have many responsibilities. Students need to understand the role and responsibilities that everyone has. A recommended list of topics that would compliment our program is included.
Thank You for your support!

This month we will wrap up our theme on the house. Students have coloured a house which they will described in writing and orally. Once we complete the theme, work will be sent home for you to look at.
We will also learn some Christmas thematic vocabulary and continue to practise using describing words (beauty, size, colour).
It is important that the reader be returned to school on Thursdays as we use the reader on a daily basis. The reader should be returned to the mailbag after your child has completed his/her homework.
Students continue to show progress. They are climbing the stairs. Bravo! Keeping in mind that not all children learn at the same pace, when the recommended homework is written in the agenda, please feel free to work on the area that is at your child's level.
Please continue to encourage your child to 'Drink the milk', 'climb the stairs'. They need to look, listen and try to remember.

This year I will be teaching Mrs Stewart-Smith's Gr1 class first block and Mrs VanZeeland-Power's Gr1 class , Mrs O'Connor's Gr1 class last block. I am looking forward to working with you in a partnership to help your child achieve his/her full potential.
The main objectives of the French program in Gr1 are to:
- Expand student's existing French vocabulary
- Provide students with experiences to develop and improve their oral and listening skills in order to
communicate their ideas to the best of their ability
- Provide students with the basic skills and strategies to read and comprehend grade appropriate
texts and demonstrate understanding
- Give students ample opportunity to familiarize themselves with the written language, following
appropriate models.
The Gr1 Social Studies program is divided into 2 strands: 'Heritage and Citizenship, Relationships, Rules and Responsibilities' and 'The Local Community, Canada and World Connections.' Students will learn about their
community: who works in the community, where they work and what they do as well as discuss their roles and responsibilities shared i a local community, at school and at home. They will create a simple timeline and identify special people and events in their life. They will also work on developing their map and globe skills.
The Gr1 program is enhanced through songs, games, learning activities, skits partner work and group work.
In addition to the letter outlining the Gr1 program, I would like to provide you with the following information regarding oral, reading, written work, activities and expectations.
* Reading: Your child's reader already contains all the word wall words that we will cover this year along with short texts. When your child reads for you, please write what your child has read and put your initials in the next column. This reading sheet will be checked periodically so that I can see if homework is being done. It is very important that your child practise reading to develop, maintain or further improve his/her oral and reading comprehension skills.
* Homework: The reader will be sent home every Wednesday so that your child can practise his/her reading.
The homework will be written in the communication book every Wednesday and will also be posted on the website in more details. The homework will be explained and discussed with the students to ensure understanding. It
is your child's responsibility to explain the homework to you.
*Written Work: Written work and/or Social Studies duo-tang will go home at the beginning of each month to be signed. this will enable you to familiarize yourself with the program and the expectations and to see how your child is doing.
Expectations: It is our goal to help your child meet his/her full potential. In order to achieve this goal we have to work as a team. It is a partnership. Students must take ownership and responsibility for their learning. In order to ensure steady progress in learning French, students are expected to: listen and follow the given instructions, focus their attention during lessons, use active listening strategies to understand and to interact, engage in daily activities (songs, games, repeating, answering questions ...) as well as use their time wisely.
I trust that this will give you an idea of what your child will be doing this year. I look forward to meeting your on Program Night. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call or write a note in the agenda addressed to Mme Gauthier. Communication is key.
Thank you again for your cooperation! We are partners in your child's journey. I look forward to working with you this year.

The students did an incredible job during the concert. I am very proud of them. I hope you got a chance to see the students' timelines on display on the wall in the primary hall.
This month we will be learning about Spring. Students will write sentences to describe a butterfly or the cycle of a butterfly. Students will have to use the thematic vocabulary to formulate quality sentences making sure to add a variety of describing words.
We will review the word wall words starting in September. Greater emphasis will be placed on listening skills (listening to understand and listening to communicate) as well as expressing themselves in complete sentences.
Social Studies: Please discuss and help your child identify the services for which the government is responsible. (ex: postal service)
An ''I can ...'' showing how your child is doing was sent home last week along with their work. I hope you had a chance to review this 'I can ...' assessment as well as the work with your child. This should give you a good idea of how your child is doing.
Please encourage your child to drink the milk and put forth their best effort.
If you have read this newsletter, please draw a sun in your child's agenda and write your initials.

By the end of this week, a sheet will be sent home asking you to pick 5 different events over the course of their young life. Therefore, the 5 events should be spread over 5 or 6 years and not all at the age of 2 for example.

Students continue to show progress. They are climbing the stairs. Bravo! Keeping in mind that not all children learn at the same pace, when the recommended homework is written in the agenda, please feel free to work on the area that is at your child's level.
Please continue to encourage your child to 'Drink the milk', 'climb the stairs' and be respectful of others.

This month we will continue to work on defining roles and responsibilities of people around us (ourselves, parents, teachers, siblings). We will discuss how these roles may change and what may cause them to change. Please discuss with your child roles and responsibilities you had growing up and your role and responsibilities now.
We will also learn about Fall. Students will describe how they make a pile of leaves, using describing words (colour words, size).
This Wednesday your child will bring home a French folder with the work that was completed in class. Please look through the work with your child. Please sign the stapled sheets on the right of the folder and return them to school on Thursday in the folder.
Students have shown a lot of progress since the beginning of the school year. They are climbing the stairs. Bravo! It is hard to believe that it is June already.

The students and I look forward to singing for you the songs we have learned this year. The concerts are on Thursday May 4.:
Mrs Shea at 9:30 in room 108
Mrs Stewart-Smyth at 11:20 in room 110
Mrs Landy at 1:10 in room 111
If you are the parents of twins, you can choose one presentation and I will make sure that both are present for that presentation.
We are now ready to complete a time line about special events in your child's life. Please fill out the sheet in your child's agenda. You will need to pick 5 different events over the course of their young life. Therefore, the 5 events should be spread over 5 or 6 years and not all at the age of 2 for example.
We will work on writing a describing text on a farm animal or a butterfly (student's choice). We will review the word wall words starting in September. Greater emphasis will be placed on listening skills (listening to understand and listening to communicate) as well as expressing themselves in complete sentences.
Please remind your child that they have to drink the milk and put forth their best effort.

April 3, 2017
During the month of March and beginning of April, we have been working on learning some farm animals, describing them and saying what they give us (milk, meat, eggs). The emphasis has been on the oral. We will also learn some zoo animals and work on using our describing words to describe them.
The last word wall words for the year are the March word wall words. Continuing on, a greater emphasis will be on reading short texts with these word wall words. It would be very beneficial to review the word wall words and the stories starting back in September.
We have learned many songs since the beginning of the school year. The Gr1s and I would like to sing these songs for you in the form of a small concert. This would take place during Education Week. The students are really looking forward to it. Once a date and time has been set, I will let you know.
Also, students will be working on completing a time line about special events in their life. By the end of this week, a sheet will be sent home asking you to pick 5 different events over the course of their young life. Therefore, the 5 events should be spread over 5 or 6 years and not all at the age of 2 for example.

It is good to be back!
This month will complete our theme about Winter. Students will learn about the clothing we wear and the activities we play. Students will be asked to describe the steps to follow to make a snowman. You can encourage your child to name the clothes he or she is putting on as they get dressed to go outside using the structure 'Je mets ...' (ex; Je mets un beau manteau bleu.).
I will be assessing their ability to read the January and February word wall words before we work on the March word wall words.
Reminder: When the reader goes home on Wednesday, it must be returned to school the following day. If you wish for the reader to go home on a different day, that is not a problem. The reader can go home any day as long as it is returned the following day as students use their reader every day.
Thank You for your support! It is much appreciated.

You are encouraged to discuss responsabilities at home with your child. You may talk about why an older or younger sibbling may have different responsabilities and why they may change.
I would also like to inform you that I will be away starting January 12 to February 9 as I am having knee surgery. The routines and expectations will continue as usual.
Thank You for your support!

Last month we worked hard on recounting how we make a pile of leaves using 'D'abord, Ensuite, Après, Finalement. Please help your child practise their recounting skills by talking about the steps needed for morning routines or while getting dressed. This will help your child understand the concept.
This month we will identify the different parts of a house outdoors and indoors as well as a few items found in each room of the house. We will describe a house using as many describing words (colour, size) as we can.
We will also continue to discuss roles and responsibilities and discuss reasons why they may change.

During the month of March and continuing this month, we have been working on learning about and describing farm and zoo animals. We have discussed what farm animals give us. Students are being assessed on their ability to formulate simple sentences to describe a farm animal and say what they give using as many describing words as they can. They will also be evaluated on describing a zoo animal.
Once we have completed this theme, we will begin to discuss the different signs of Spring (what we wear, what we play, changes in nature).
No more word wall words will be added to the reader. We will review the word wall words to date. We will focus on reading the thematic stories and simple story books. In doing so, we will identify word wall words, mots amis and familiar words. We will work on developing our comprehension skills.

During the month of March, we have been working on learning some farm animals, describing them and saying what they give us (milk, meat, eggs). The emphasis was on oral skills.
This will take place during Education Week.
Please remind your child of their responsibilities at school: to listen attentively, to try to understand, to engage actively, to focus on the task at hand when completing written tasks, to be respectful and to strive to do the best that they can.
Thank You for your cooperation,
Mme Gauthier

This month we will wrap up our theme on the house. Students have coloured a house which they have described in writing. This week, they will be assessed on how well they can describe their house orally.

Happy New Year! Bonne et heureuse année!
A big THANK YOU to Mrs Armour, Mrs Schacker, M. Buccino, Mrs Parent and Mrs Watzenboeck who came in to talk about their work to the Gr1 classes. The children and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about different occupations. Also a big THANK YOU to Mr. and Mrs Hozjan who are coming in this Friday to talk about their work.
This month we will talk about different people who work in our community. We will discuss how they contribute to our community as well as how what they do relates to us. We will also continue to enquire about how and why our responsibilities may change.

It is important that the reader be returned to school on Thursdays as we use the reader on a daily basis. The reader should be returned to the mailbag after your child has completed their homework.
Merci!

This month we will continue to work on defining roles and responsibilities of people around us (ourselves, parents, teachers, siblings). We will discuss how these roles may change and what may cause them to change. Please discuss with your child roles and responsibilities you had growing up and now.
We will also learn about Fall. Students will describe how they make a pile of leaves, using describing words.
Today your child is bringing home a French folder with the work that was completed in class. Please look through the work with your child. Please sign the stapled sheets on the right of the folder and return them to school tomorrow in the folder.
Students have shown a lot of progress since the beginning of the school year. They are climbing the stairs. Bravo! Keeping in mind that not all children learn at the same pace, when the recommended homework is written in the agenda, please feel free to work on the area that is at your child's level.
Please continue to encourage your child to 'Drink the milk' and 'climb the stairs'.

They had a lot of input as to what we would sing.

A letter was sent home today to ask if you would be interested in speaking to the Gr1 classes about the work you do. This includes a stay at home Mom as they have many responsibilities. Students need to understand the role and responsibilities that everyone has. A recommended list of topics that would compliment our program is included.
If you are interested in speaking to the Gr1 classes, please return the sheet no later than January 8 as I need to organize the time for the presentations.
Thank You for your support!

This month we will touch on Christmas, review the prepositions (sur, sous, dans, devant, derrière, à côté de) and work on using describing words to improve the quality of our sentences. We are presently learning the song 'D'où viens-tu bergère?' for the Christmas concert.
The reader can go home more frequently if you would like as long as it is returned to school every day. Please sign your child's work on Wednesday when it is sent home and return it on Thursday in its folder.

Students thoroughly enjoyed sharing the house that they coloured and reading the sentences that they wrote to their classmates. `The sharing was taped so the students will have a chance to watch themselves. They also enjoyed singing and playing the game 'J'ai un beau château.'

Gr1 September Newsletter
Dear Parents,
This month we will learn the name of the objects in the classroom. We will review the colours and greetings (Bonjour! Au revoir ...). We will work on mastering the sound letters make as well as combining consonants and vowels (m + a = ma). To support these goals we will learn 3 songs: Abc, Je connais mes voyelles and Qu'est-ce qu'il y a dans la salle de classe?.
We will also investigate and discuss roles and responsabilities. We will look at how and why they may change as well as try to figure out how they affect us and help us be responsable members of society.
For Gr1, homework will be on Wednesdays. A note will be written in the agenda. You can also visit this site to get a more detailed explanation of the homework.
We are truly off to a great start. The students are really enjoying the songs.
Please help your child "Drink the milk and climb the stairs" in other words to take ownership and responsiblity for their learning and to learn as much French as they can.
